Many people underestimate the importance of water to the body. I would say 80% of online clients who come to me are not drinking enough. It’s really important to understand why proper hydration is important for optimal health and fat loss. Water is the most abundant nutrient in our body and is vital for maintaining healthy blood flow, proper kidney function, proper sodium/potassium/electrolyte balance and proper digestive functions.
Put simply, everything in the body functions better when hydrated – including fat burning. As a rule I encourage all of my clients to drink between three to five litres per day – especially on days they exercise. This will lead to having more energy and focus throughout the day and help the body burn more stored fat.
“Sugar energy from sports drinks or fizzy drinks just causes the body to crave even more junk food”
I’m not a big fan of sports drinks or fizzy drinks. I think people rely far too much on sugar energy than real energy derived from macronutrients (fats, protein and carbohydrates) which just causes the body to crave even more junk food as blood sugar levels take a nose dive.
I think nothing beats water when it comes to hydration. If you find it boring to drink try squeezing some fresh lemon or lime in it to give it some flavour.
One common side effect of increasing your water intake is the constant need to run to the loo. This will get easier as your body adapts to the new water intake so persevere and watch how your energy levels go up and body fat goes down!
