10 tips on how to avoid a Christmas hangover - Virgin Pure

The Christmas party season can be all too fleeting. We wish it could be Christmas party day every day. While some might balk at the thought of a non-stop merry-go-round of party, sleep, work, party, sleep, work - not us.

Yes, we have to admit that we are that annoyingly effervescent social butterfly and yes - our secret is entirely healthy and legal. So, what's in our water? Well, uh... water. We don't mean to be smug, but that's the deal - pure and simple.

Read on to find out our top 10 tips on how to avoid a hangover!

10 Tips on how to prevent a hangover

Drink plenty of water while you’re drinking

Drink wine with food and match it with water - it's your perfect party season rule. The best way to avoid a hangover is not to overdo it and get dehydrated at all. But you don't have to be a party pooper - a little tipple of something good helps extend the fun. Just make sure you get some good, pure water down your neck too. Build up your stamina with top quality purified water rich with essential minerals.

Avoid drinks high in congeners

Congeners are produced during the fermentation or distillation process. Research suggests congener content may play a role in the occurrence of a hangover. Check if your alcohol has high congeners before you drink!

Drink water the morning after

If you didn’t manage to stick by the match-wine-with-water rule, the best cure for a hangover is rehydration. We all know that alcohol dries you out. It's a diuretic, so it'll make you pee a lot, hence you get dehydrated - leading to those banging headaches and nasty hangovers. So, when you’re thinking about how to prevent a hangover, make sure you drink plenty of water in the morning!

Get enough sleep

Sleep it off! Making sure you stay hydrated and sleeping off the alcohol is the best game plan as lack of sleep can contribute to your fatigue. Anyway, you’re probably already tired from your Christmas dinner!

Eat a good breakfast.

Having a good, balanced breakfast can help your body stay nourished. Your blood sugar levels can be maintained with a good breakfast. Though this can be a bit of a challenge on top of an impending Christmas meal!

Vitamin supplements

Vitamin supplements can help revitalise your body. When you're drinking, this can really help. Although Christmas food is delicious, it might not always be the most nutritious.

Drink in moderation or not at all

This one’s pretty simple – keep it simple! Limiting alcohol intake or abstaining is always the best option.

Drink one kind of alcohol

You can keep better track of how much you're drinking, and you're less likely to upset your stomach. Mixing alcohol might sound like a good idea, but it’s probably not.

Boost those electrolytes

Your electrolytes can suffer when you lose extra fluids from drinking alcohol. Snacking on electrolyte-rich foods can help to replenish them. Think: bananas, avocado, spinach, broccoli, potatoes, beans, almonds and more.

Exercise

If you’re able to get up and go, a good sweat is great for clearing the hangover fog. Mild exercise increases circulation and your metabolism helps get rid of the toxins.

Oh - there's also one other secret about how to get a handle on the party season this Christmas: no matter how up-for-it you are, no matter how much of a buzz you're on after the eighteenth party in a row - never, EVER wear those reindeer antler headbands. That's just not cool.

Now that you know how to avoid a hangover, check out the different types of sugars you should look out for, so you can stay hydrated!
